A Mosaic of M16, including the Pillars of Creation

This week’s post is a combination of a full-color 2MASS mosaic (made with the Montage service at IPAC) of the region around M16, an Equatorial coordinate grid, an overlay of USNO-B1 sources (from Gator) scaled by Blue magnitude,
and footprints of three HST camera images (green boxes).

The middle HST footprint includes the measurements used to create the famous  “Pillars of Creation” image from Hubble (actually 32 different images from four separate cameras in the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board Hubble).

The mosaic of M16 was created by Dr. John Good (IPAC).
